They claim it is "ESD done right", so I think they aim to replace ESD in GNOME.

It doesn't need to be a standard, as they also say on the site, 90% of existing Linux sound apps can use it already.

It supports apps that use ESD, ALSA, GStreamer. Xine and Mplayer have support for it's native protocol.
