I'm no expert on these things. In my case I have to add noauto to my nfs lines in fstab because I don't want the nfs shares mounted at boot. I never had to edit any file and any nfs shares were always auto mounted at boot without noauto.

Mind you it has been quite some time since I have looked at or changed any of the options for anything in fstab, it's possible the behavior has changed in the mean time and I didn't notice.
