Since Florian Kulzer is being kind enough to attempt remote diagnosis, I'll see how that goes first (also because at some later point I'd like this to be a samba print server). If that fails, then I shall try to dredge up my memories of the 90s and getting the filter chain working again.. Thanks for letting me know it's still possible!
