Second idea, udev may not create eth0 instantly (I doubt). Have you tried ifconfig eth0 up at starting, after 5minutes, after 1 hour ? Third idea, kernel problem. Have you tried another kernel ? If you can, try with a Knoppix CD to see if another kernel version works better.
