You should put your tetex packages on hold: # aptitude hold tetex-base tetex-bin tetex-extra Then try aptitude -s dist-upgrade. If that would still pull in texlive, you are bitten by bug #434731: aptitude will ignore the hold if a package that is _not_ put on hold can only be upgraded by upgrading a package that _is_ on hold. But hopefully that will not be the case. The migration to texlive will pull in many hundred of megabytes if you have tetex-extra installed. In that case I would recommend to use aptitude's TUI to uninstall it and manually select the texlive packages you want (look in the dependencies of texlive-full). This is how I managed the transition without pulling in too much stuff.
