I don't use gpod, so I'm taking a wild guess. Is your iPod in Mac or "Windows" format? Mine is in Mac format and it won't automount in Linux - the kde/gnome automout stuff doesn't know what to do with it since the partition ID is "fa" which according to fdisk -l is "unknown"

I haven't really bothered to try to fix that because I use a Mac at home.
