Hello Michael,
First of all you have to install:
*manpages-dev - Manual pages about using GNU/Linux for development
manpages-posix-dev - Manual pages about using a POSIX system for developmen=
t
stl-manual - C++-STL documentation in HTML
libstdc++6-doc - The GNU Standard C++ Library v3 (documentation files)*
Then you have to find an editor that fits your requirements. There are tons
of editors... nowadays I'm using an X editor and I prefer multi platform
editors because I work on Windows and Linux and I want to remember just a
unique set of shortcuts. My favourite editors are:
These two works on Linux and Windows
*scite - Lightweight GTK-based Programming Editor
geany - A fast and lightweight IDE
*
Maybe you want to use a bigger editor:
*eclipse - Extensible Tool Platform and Java IDE
eclipse-cdt - C/C++ Development Tools for Eclipse*
It is not "straightforward" to configure eclipse to work with C++. however
the cdt plugin for eclipse is REALLY powerful (I've not used it for 1 or 2
years), however it has powerful features like "refactoring".
There are many other editors / IDE like:
*
kdevelop - An IDE for Unix/X11
kate - advanced text editor for KDE
anjuta - A GNOME development IDE for C/C++
*
If you do a small research over the internet you will find much more
editors... that's the list I have in my head right now... but there are man=
y
other editors.

that would be possible, but many isp now make it hard

The fact that it works on WinXP should've given you a clue :) It has a
seperate power cable that plugs straight into the wall outlet.

Not really, since I'm not clued in to each and every USB adapter.

Hi All
First post - pretty new to Debian, less so to linux in general.
I have a PC here (mainboard IBM 819966U) running Etch that seems to
hang after sitting idle for a long period of time.
It didn't have this problem previously when using Mandrake 10.1
although I have changed some of the hardware since then.
It _seems like_ the hard drives are the issue - they don't spin back
up and any attempt at logging in at the console times out.
It looks like the problem goes away if I change the suspend type to
S1 instead of S3 in the BIOS, although I thought Linux overrode the
BIOS when using ACPI?
ACPI seems like a real can of worms right now - is there a good way
to track down what the issue is? and if I find it will I be able to
fix anything?
Suggestions appreciated,
Brian

Debian uses SMTP-time anti-spam methods. For a short time the list was not
going through spamassassin but I believe that the SMTP-time stuff was still
in effect. The problem has been fixed now, of course.

Spamassassin blocked most of it here.

What I meant to say was that the fact that it works at all under windows
should have indicated that power *is* being supplied *somehow*. That
you didn't know exactly how it was supplied doesn't really matter. It
has a standard USB connector on one end and a big chunky dual ATA plus
SATA converter at the other end. Power supplied by separate cable.

Yes it is. This cable is not sold as or intended as an "external hard
drive" solution. It is a cable for the simply reason of being able to
temporarily attach a hard drive to another system without opening the
working system.

An oddity in Lenny. Not sure if anything is wrong.
libmime-perl requires libfile-temp-perl >= 0.17.
perl-modules 5.8.8-12 provides libfile-temp-perl.
Yet dpkg and apt-get won't accept perl-modules to satisfy the
requirement and instead install libfile-temp-perl 0.18-1.
Is this correct? Can you provide a pointer to the spec?
Thanks,

No, I checked headers during the flood. Debian was forwarding spam
directly received from hosts with PTR records without matching A records.

Yup. I'd say fully half my spam today came from debian-user. I'm
starting to think about unsubscribing; it just is starting to take too
much work to sort out the wheat from the chaff, and my spam filter
doesn't seem to work very well on list mail.

Do you see any messages related to the tg3 driver in the syslog or the
dmesg output? Can you "modprobe -v tg3"?
It seems that Kenshi's images have the old usr/share/misc/pci.ids, which
might explain why it is still referred to as "unknown device 1713".
However, this should not keep the 2.6.23 version of the tg3 driver from
recognizing the card since it has its own list of PCI-IDs.
I am starting to suspect that your problem might be caused by missing
firmware. AFAIK, all binary firmware blobs were recently removed from
the version of tg3.c that is distributed by Debian. (The kernel.org
version of tg3.c has about 850 additional lines, mostly hex chunks.)

BBC has made a documentary about Linux and Open Source.

If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough.
