We've had this discussion before, but I'll just reiterate that I actually prefer to configure my MUA's internal MTA functionality and not rely only on my main SMTP server (Exim, which happens to be on the same box, but that doesn't really matter) to do relaying, to avoid having a single point of failure. Exim / Gmail has not always been the most reliable partnership ...
