Well, the primary advantage to rolling your own is that you can
customize the kernel for your hardware.
Generic kernels include drivers for all sorts of things, most of which
you don't have.
This can reduce the size of the kernel, which can translate into faster
operations, as well as reduced space needed to hold it (and the modules
you build, if any).

Would it be worth it to set up a mixed stable/testing system to use
the testing version of compizconfig-settings-manager? I am thinking
of either doing that or sticking with gconf.

I have no experience with it.
You might also try a Google on "Screencast software".

google the problem, this is a know problem that occurs
occasionally with k3b (it kind of forgets where your
drives are) there are some kernel moduals that can be
set to load on startup that usually takes care of the
problem (you'll have to google to find them, i cannot

that is also a possibility :)

Subject: fetchmail authentication error
Message-ID: <87fxwdu50l.fsf@teufel.hartford-hwp.com>
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii
For some time I've been running fetchmail and getting the warning:
"upgrade to TLS failed." I was told I could ignore it, for fetchmail can
only use TLS (Transpost Layer Security protocol) if it's compiled with
SSL support, which my binary version does not support. I'm using
fetchmail 6.3.6.1etch1.
I've also had the error: "Server CommonName mismatch: localhost !=
pop.hartford-hwp.com", but this didn't keep fetchmail from working.
I suspect the From: line of this message has some odd garbage, and this
may be related to my authentication problem, but I've no idea how to
proceed to repair it.
For no obvious reason, fetchmail failed to retrieve mail and times out
after five minutes. I got:
fetchmail: Server CommonName mismatch: localhost != pop.hartford-hwp.com
fetchmail: Server certificate verification error: self signed certificate
fetchmail: timeout after 300 seconds waiting for server pop.hartford-hwp.com.
fetchmail: socket error while fetching from
brownh@hartford-hwp.com@pop.hartford-hwp.com
fetchmail: Query status=2 (SOCKET)
In looking into this certificate verification problem, I find that it
can be ignored, but I went ahead and did:
$ mkdir ~/.certs
$ openssl s_client -connect imap.example.com:993 | \
> sed -ne '/-BEGIN CERTIFICATE-/,/-END CERTIFICATE-/p'
> .certs/imap.pem
gethostbyname failure
connect:errno=0
$ c_rehash ~/.certs
This creates empty file: ~/.certs/imap.pem
I next add the line to .fetchmail.rc:
sslcertck sslcertpath $HOME/.certs
I finally do: c_rehash
The problem is that my ~/.certs/imap/pem is empty. I assume there
should be something in it.

Hi All,
I have a Debian Linux 4 running on Sun Ultra 60 machine. I want to install
FreeNX on it so I can access the desktop remotely. I understand there is no
binary available for Sparc machines. Could someone send detailed
instructions on how to install it?
Thanks in advance!

Do you have any numbers that kernel with unneeded hardware options not
compiled in actually run faster? I would be very suprised by this as the
additional code just never runs. AFAIK all applicable processor
optimizations for powerpc are already activated in the stock Debian
kernels.
The space argument is theoretically true but I don't think it's relevant on
any actual powerpc laptop which is able to run 2.6.24.
IMHO the main reason to compile ones own kernel is to test new
features. Either things that are beeing actively developed and therefore
not in the latest released kernel (or not with all the features) like
the b43 wireless driver or if you want to activated experimental
features that are not enabled in the Debian kernel for safety reasons
(like preempt which caused problems on powerpc in the past).

The main reason I build a custom kernel is because the generic debian
kernel packages are way too bloated (with tons of modules) to fit on my
small root partition (144 MB).... :-(
In my kernel I just build wired-in drivers for those devices I have, and
basically no modules at all.
[It can be a pain figuring the right drivers etc to include the first
time though...]

A while ago I upgraded to etch from sarge. I now discover the g++ is
missing. aptitude doesn't show the package. my sources.list points
at
deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ etch main
deb-src http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ etch main
deb http://security.debian.org/ etch/updates main
what am I doing wrong?

Amit,
thank you very much for your suggestion. I tried WEP and it works fine.
I am running WEP then in the meantime until solve the WAP problem.

Jose,
thank you very much for your suggestion. I will try the static address
method and let you know.
