The status of support for [9]4311 rev 02 cards is not entirely clear; Larry Finger (one of the devs) wrote on Sep. 24, 2007[0]:

Ask on the b43 list about the current status of support for your card.

No need to shutdown and restart just right click on the size of files total= =20 progress bar at the bottom then set it manually to the 4.4 option. Have you thought about using other methods for remote desktop access that are already available in Debian, such as vncserver, vncclient and (of course) ssh, for remote tasks that don't require a graphical environment on the remote end? fox@m206-157:~$ sudo aptitude show vncserver [sudo] password for dfox: Package: vncserver State: not installed Version: 3.3.7-14 Priority: optional Section: x11 Maintainer: Ola Lundqvist <opal@debian.org> Uncompressed Size: 1204k Depends: libc6 (>= 2.3.6-6), libgcc1 (>= 1:4.1.1-12), libice6 (>= 1:1.0.0), libsm6, libstdc++6 (>= 4.1.1-12), libx11-6, libxext6, zlib1g (>= 1:1.2.1), perl, xbase-clients, x11-common | xserver-common, vnc-common (>= 3.3.6-1) PreDepends: dpkg (>= 1.6.8) Recommends: xfonts-base Suggests: vnc-java Conflicts: vnc, vnc-doc Replaces: vnc, vnc-doc Provides: vnc-server, xserver Description: Virtual network computing server software VNC stands for Virtual Network Computing. I haven't gotten that many responses, but here's what I plan to do barring future suggestions. (1) About configuring compiz - I'll stick with gconf. It's not the easiest to use, but certainly easier than dealing with mixed systems. (BTW, I did find the gconf key that controls which plugins are loaded, eventually :-) ) (2) About having a gdm entry to start a compiz + xfce4 session on login. I haven't figured out how to do this yet (I think I will have to do more reading / looking around in my x startup scripts). In the meantime, I cheated and am getting about the same functionality with the xfce4-session manager. (3) A third thing I've noticed is a problem with autohidden panels. I have two - one on the left and one on the bottom. The bottom one works fine, but whenever I have compiz running, the one on the left ignores the mouse pointer and absolutely refuses to come out of hiding. -- Jimmy Wu Registered Linux User #454138

Thank you. According to this post https://lists.berlios.de/pipermail/bcm43xx-dev/2008-January/006622.html did I fetch the patch from http://linuxwireless.org/download/b43/patch_2.6.24_for_4311_2 and copied the file to /usr/src/ then followed these actions to build the kernel from debian 2.6.24 source with these patches: # ln -s linux-source-2.6.24 /usr/src/linux # cp /boot/config-2.6.24-1-amd64 /usr/src/linux/.config # cd /usr/src/linux # patch -p1 <patch_2.6.24_for_4311_2 # make clean # make xconfig # make-kpkg clean # fakeroot make-kpkg --initrd --append-to-version=-b43 kernel_image kernel_headers # cd .. # sudo dpkg -i linux-headers-2.6.24-b43_2.6.24-b43-10.00.Custom_amd64.deb # sudo dpkg -i linux-image-2.6.24-b43_2.6.24-b43-10.00.Custom_amd64.deb (these lines are handwriting and may have typos) The installation runs finally into this error: [...] Setting up linux-image-2.6.24-b43 (2.6.24-b43-10.00.Custom) ...
