Actually both make it very simple to filter by author and subject (in Thunderbird: just type text in the "search" field, in mutt - press l, type your text and Enter).

Learning all of those ~CHAR patters takes time, and they are not accessible enough from within the interface (compare pine's on-line help to mutt's)
