Hm, my Inspiron's fans seem to working fine. I can see the CPU
temperature is usually around 42C, which I'm guessing is a good
temperature, although it does go as high as 70C when I'm compiling or
number crunching. I think the XPS uses similar chipsets to the
Inspiron.
Or did you mean something else?

Some update:
With latest xserver-xorg-core update, it seems that there is no crash.
Also, I made some changes to my xorg.conf according the source I
mentioned before.
My system has been running for about one day, no crash yet.
Anyway, sid is stable enough, I think, if you don't dist-upgrade
everyday.
Many thanks,

Well, my vostro has two fans (about the same as an Inspiron, differnt=20
case). If I never turn them on, (with i8kutils) it does not seem to=20
overheat, but you never hear the fans kick in. With i8kutils installed,=20
they turn on and off as needed with different set points for AC and=20
battery. Do you ever hear your fans blow? Google Dell laptop ubuntu=20
fans or Dell Inspiron fan ubuntu. There is a userspace tool someone=20
came up with for the amd64 userspace that works. Like I said earlier,=20
to much work. I like the i8kutils, set the temp points (and only then=20
if you want to use F instead of C), install them on gkrellm, you can=20
then "see" the fans spin. Turn them on auto, or set them manualy to=20
off, slow, or full.

Yup...
Desire to be able to read my email from the console (occasional X
bugs in Sid was one impetus for this) are why I originally
originally set up postfix as a satellite node, fetchmail and
Maildir, and learned the basics of Mutt.
This way, I could still read email all my email, surf the web and
play nethack even if X went south for a week or more.

I do not use pam_umask , but:
(1) /usr/share/doc/libpam-umask/README says:
If a user has a .pam_umask
in his home directory, the contents will be used to set the umask.
(2) Linkname: pam_umask(8) - Linux man page
URL: http://linux.die.net/man/8/pam_umask
says
The PAM module tries to get the umask value from the following places =
in the following
order:
- umask=3D argument
- umask=3D entry of the users GECOS field
- pri=3D entry of the users GECOS field
- ulimit=3D entry of the users GECOS field
- UMASK=3D entry from /etc/default/login
- UMASK entry from /etc/login.defs
It also speaks about a debug option.=20
Looking at the sources (apt-get source libpam-umask), I dubt that the
man page applies to the debian version of libpam-umask, but a look at
the above files (/etc/passwd) might be worthy.
(3) perhaps a=20

I know these are all ubuntu posting, but trust me, debian works the same=20
(as regards to this matter). I don't know if you suffer from the famed=20
Dell Fans syndrome or not, but I know I do with a Vostro 1500 w/intel=20
core2 Duo cpu T5270 @ 1.4GHz. Dell ships these lappies out with=20
i8kutils, or so I would think (I have not purchased a Dell with Linux=20
box, I just installed ubuntu/debian on them). One of you Linux on Dell=20
guys can tell me if they come with i8kutils on them. If they do, that=20
would be your answer on why they ship with i386 and NOT amd64 kernels=20
(among others, of course. AMD64 has progressed far in a year and Dell is=20
not going to ship an "iffy" OS. It has got to work in an expected way).

Sometime today I will turn off i8k and let you know of the behavior. I=20
don't remember the default because I scourer the internet for howtos=20
before I install debian on any laptop to look for pit falls before I=20
start. So, right from day one, I just went and got i8kutils. Besides=20
with a low (wow, how far we have come!) level cpu like this, why run=20
amd64? I would gain nothing, can't even run vms with vitalization=20
turned on. I would get Geek points, and that IS worth thinking=20
about..........

Greetings,
I am working on creating a custom debian repository at the University
for whom I work.
I have successfully created a "simple" repository, one which has all the
relevant files in a single hierarchy.
I am now trying to split things off and use "pools", so that I can serve
various distributions (etch, lenny, sid) from the same URL.
Here is the problem I encounter, both with 'apt-get update' and
'aptitude update'.
Failed to fetch http://lager.d.umn.edu/debian/dists/etch/Release Unable
to find expected entry umd/binary-i386/Packages in Meta-index file
(malformed Release file?)
Reading package lists... Done
W: Couldn't stat source package list http://lager.d.umn.edu etch/umd
Packages
(/var/lib/apt/lists/lager.d.umn.edu_debian_dists_etch_umd_binary-i386_Packa=
ges) - stat (2 No such file or directory)
W: You may want to run apt-get update to correct these problems
E: Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old
ones used instead.
But the first line claims 'Failed to fetch', but I can:
% wget http://lager.d.umn.edu/debian/dists/etch/Release

apt-ftparchive --config-file=3D/etc/apt/apt-ftparchive.conf release . >

gpg -b -o ${RELEASE}.gpg ${RELEASE}
and here is the /etc/apt/apt-ftparchive.conf file:
APT {
FTPArchive {

Origin "UMD ITSS";
Label "UMD ITSS Debian repository";
Suite custom;
Codename etch;
Component umd;
Architectures "i386 source";

}
}
}
Here is the sources.list line I am using:
deb http://lager.d.umn.edu/debian etch umd
And version of apt:
ii apt 0.6.46.4-0.1 Advanced front-end for dpk
Does anyone see anything I missed?

create a .forward file in your home directory, and put a line in it of
the form:
|"|$HOME/bin/your.program -and some arguments"
look at http://linuxgazette.net/issue14/procmail.html for some details
if you want to do something fancier, install procmail (Google it)
do a little research - you want to get permissions set properly, to
avoid opening up a really big security hole in your system, and you want
to be careful not to set up any mail loops

Let fetchmail read mail from ISP to local MTU (exim4)
Use procmail to run script on incoming mail.
Read mail from local MTU by kmail and icedove.

My backup requirement is as follows:
Old laptop, for personal use, running Debian Etch. I intend to backup every
month to DVD via my external DVD writer, and to leave copies with friends.
I want encryption. I use LUKS, but only for my home partition.
My hard drive is 80 giga-bytes big. My partitions are home, root, alternate
root, a data partition, and a Windows NTFS that I have not used in years :-)
Current solution is to "cp --archive" the home partition into an external
hard drive.
I use GenISOImage and Wodim to burn my data CDs. Also, I prefer CPIO to Tar,
and command-line to GUI.
I am looking at Mondo <http://www.mondorescue.net/>, etc. Kindly give
suggestions.
