Hmm, the wording in ipsec_auto(8) needs work; will fix. Yes, "lifetime" is the drop-dead time for an SA, and rekeystart is how much lead time there is between that and renegotiation start. And key life is measured from negotiation, regardless of the state of any earlier keys.
