If the purpose of the gateway is to protect packets coming from a subnet, there is no substitute for running tests from the subnet!

It's possible (at least manually, not sure about automatic keying for this yet) to construct a tunnel for traffic from the SG itself to the other SG (or to the other's subnet), but that is a different sort of connection.
