It turns out (my thanks to Sandy Harris and Sean Rooney!) that SuSE is indeed available in Toronto, if one knows where to look, and I now have a copy of SuSE 5.3. I'm about to be in Boston for ten days, so there will probably be some delay in doing anything about this, but at least the tools are in hand. My thanks to everyone who offered help on this.
