linux-ipsec: AH-HMAC-SHA1-96 working, is back compat necessary?

Subject says it all...on to work on ESP_DES_HMAC_MD5_96.

The OpenBSD IPSEC implementation provides compatibility with the older set of ipsec specs (I assume RFC182[5-9]). Is this out of convenience, necessity, or courtesy?

How useful/necessary is it for KLIPS to provide backwards compatibility with that set of standards?
