The main issue is jumping from 4.2 to 5.x is that in that jump, the default C library became glibc. That's where all linux boxes are likely going anyway, since development on the older C library has ceased. The change from 5.0 to 5.1 are relatively minor from an IPSEC point of view, and I suspect the changes from 5.1 to 5.2 will be the same (with the posible exception of a 2.2 kernel, should such a beast exist then, but you'll likely have to recompile the kernel anyway, so...)

I would say go for 5.1, since it's a bit ahead of the pack in making the switch (Debian should make the switch to glibc this month).
