A further complication is that minor, even trivial, changes to the
Makefile can provoke massive recompiles if everything depends on Makefile.
I have deeply mixed feelings about this one. My inclination these days is
to think that an aspect of configuration which is changeable enough to
cause trouble here doesn't really belong in the Makefile at all.

That being the case, I think I'd have opted to put everything on stdout,
simply because it's usually less hassle to manipulate (e.g., redirect)...
but since this is all going to have to change eventually, it's not really
very important.
