Unfortunately, there is still the problem that gethostbyname() wants a NUL-terminated string. However, the attractions of avoiding malloc() are sufficiently large that I'm tentatively just decreeing that a hostname of over 99 characters does not work (so a fixed internal buffer can be used).

I hope so, but it's something I haven't yet looked into -- it's on my list.
