How exactly did you check the signature? Dealing with a separate signature file is a little tricky, and the *order* of the filenames matters, because PGP is trying to be clever and gets confused easily. To check the signature in such a case, PGP has to see the signature *first*:

        pgp freeswan-0.85.tar.gz.sig freeswan-0.85.tar.gz
