Should be okay, but I'm wondering where all the -D, -I, etc. garbage is coming from -- does use of $(MAKE) perhaps drag all that in? You might experiment with changing "$(MAKE)" to just "make" and see if that cures it; if so, we'll have to think how best to handle this.

Just "make" in that directory builds both versions of the library. The top-level Makefile normally does that for you.
