Todd's onto something here, although these sorts of problems generally manifest themselves as signal 11's. I've seen them several times, and almost without fail, it's been a problem with flaky SIMMs. The exception was a really crappy motherboard and an early AMD K6. Replacing the CPU and board fixed that one.
