While I am not a big fan of long options in general, given that we *are*
providing them, I don't see any good purpose to be served by also having
a second way of doing things -- especially one that is ill-documented and
seldom tested. I think it's better to insist that everyone do things the
same way, which in this case means forbidding single-letter flags.
