It should probably read "invalid data format" or something along those lines. It probably means that the copy of spi you're using hasn't been recompiled to use the new atodata() that knows about 0c.

I've made some small improvements (it now says "unknown format or syntax error"); it's hard to be much more precise when the symptom is basically "atodata() couldn't make head or tail of what you gave it".
