John, Henry Spencer last night added another key input format to match what everyone else is doing, a 'character' format that lets you do things like '0cThis is not a very good key.' (though it must be the right length).
This new keying format works for AH-HMAC-MD5 but not for ESP-3DES-SHA1 (or maybe other transforms) yet. I don't know why but even if I botherd looking I could not distribute a patch.
