Six hours ago, I'd have said that it would surprise me... but as you may have already seen, Hugh Daniel ran into something rather similar in interop testing this evening. Looks like the kernel code is not too robust against a confused peer.

Mind you, in a way it's a relief: it turns your mysterious case of creeping bit rot into something with a definite cause. Stay tuned.
