Re: linux-ipsec: Another draft effort: vpn mini-howto

Hello...

I would like to make a small, cosmetic, suggestion...

There already exists a VPN Mini-Howto. It's really kind of a simplistic affair of encrypting PPP packets using ssh and tunneling them over a network, but it does work and I know people who are using this now.

Because this is in use, I would hate to see one VPN Mini-Howto replace another, totally different, VPN Mini-Howto and the confusion that would result when someone doing one thing looked and found their reference (or a reference they sent someone like a co-worker to) was now on a totally different subject.

        The suggestion...

Either integrate the two into one document (that would be amusing considering how different they are) or choose a different name. Call it an IPsec Mini-Howto or a FreeSwan Mini-Howto. Either one is accurate but I think that an IPsec Mini-Howto would be clearer to someone searching the archives.

As far as a VPN Mini-Howto goes... I think that there are enough tools and techniques out there to do a real, full blown VPN Howto that goes into various techniques and covers the advantages and disavantages of each. Maybe even cover some off the wall topics like tunneling PPTP through Linux Firewalls (Hey that's a legitimate topic for a VPN - I gotta work with these damn things!).

If we want a Mini-Howto on IPsec or FreeSwan, great... Let's call it that. If we want to REALLY do a VPN Howto, that's great too, but that covers a hell of a lot more turf than just IPsec or FreeSwan...

Do you need help?X

        My $.02
