The reason why it doesn't test for validity is easy: in Red Hat 4.2, the last time this issue was revisited, there wasn't any reliable way to do that. (The signal-0 trick worked but was not documented -- if it's not in the docs, you can't rely on it! I see that in RH5.1, the kill(2) manpage has finally gotten around to promising that it works.)

However, yes, it definitely ought to generate an error message. DHR?

RTFM. :-) The filename changes to include the port number if you use a different port, and yes, this is documented.
