[Design] make check: eliminate carry-over from ancient tests

I've changed functions.sh to delete a subdirectory of testing/*/results just before running the test that will repopulate it.

I did this after being confused for a long time by results left over from ancient tests.

The result seems to work, but be warned: I didn't completely understand what I was changing.
