[Design] BUG: Corrupted Makefile problem in -pre8

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
I have suffered a make file target failure in -pre8. The situation is that I have a 'clean' system, freshly defrosted compiled kernel tree etc.

I take freeswan--pre8 and tell it to "make oldgo", which now makes a module ipsec.o rather then a static one (sigh). It worked just fine. I then did something I don't often do, I did a "make minstall" rather then a "make kinstall", and now I get this error:

"""
hugh@east.test.toad.com: make minstall : Wed Feb 19 06:26:50 PST 2003 make -C linux/net/ipsec ARCH=i386 KLIPSMODULE=true TOPDIR=/usr/src/linux -f /usr /src/freeswan-2.00-pre8/linux/net/ipsec/defconfig -f Makefile MODULE_DEF_INCLUDE =/usr/src/freeswan-2.00-pre8/packaging/linus/config-all.h modules_install make[1]: execvp: /usr/src/linux/scripts/pathdown.sh: Permission denied make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/src/freeswan-2.00-pre8/linux/net/ipsec' tatot.o rangetoa.o satoa.o prng.o pfkey_v2_parse.o pfkey_v2_build.o pfkey_ v2_debug.o pfkey_v2_ext_bits.o version.o ipc<D0>mkdir -p /kernel/ cp ipsec.o /kernel/

"""

I see no mangled binary as the above would suggest: east# find . ../linux-2.4.20/ -name ip\*dir east#

The making of /kernel/ is clearly an error. I suspect that our makefile is corrupted. I would fix it, but I am not free to do that, here in the USSA or in the Free World so long as Americans live under the rule of Presidential Declaration...
