In general, don't use these settings if your machine has a valid defaultroute. For instance, roadwarriors will get a gateway and defaultroute from the DHCP server, and should never have any nexthop parameter defined. If a security gateway has a defaultroute, then also it does not need to specify any nexthops. Nexthops are just to point out which interface traffic should go over if Pluto cannot determine that from the normal routing table. Paul -- God devised pigeons as a means of punishment for man.
