Some more details:  

I also have X509patch-0.9.25-freeswan-1.99 in the mix. And I found this interesting archive from Ken Bantoft:

I'm not building Super Frees/WAN, just the regular package from source. And I did make dep and then

make modules from the intermediate kernel I did before trying to build freeswan. So I am pretty much lost...
