[Users] how to make ipsec.o module (X.509 patch)

Hello,
I'm installing FreeSWAN with the X.509 patch, but I can't get the ipsec.o module compiled, nor the kernel with klips support. Following the installation and configuration guide from strongsec.com, I compiled a 2.4.18 kernel, ran the patch into the freeswan's source tree , and then compiled freeswan. After installed it, I have tried to 'make module', from the same directory (source tree for freeswan), and got this error:

# make module
rm -f out.kbuild out.kinstall
egrep -q '^CONFIG_MODULES=y' /usr/src/linux/.config egrep -q '^CONFIG_IPSEC=m' /usr/src/linux/.config make: *** [module] Error 1

What does this means? do I have to recompile the kernel with some patch included with freeswan? Reading klips/README I get confused about the relationship between the compilation of klips and the compilation of the kernel. Do I need to copy this klips directory into the linux source tree and then make modules for linux? I have re configured the kernel several times with make menuconfig looking for something additional to configure within 'make menuconfig'. I have downloaded freeswan-1.99 and x509patch-0.9.26-freeswan-1.99 and kernel 2.4.18 from thir respective source sites.

I would appreciate any help, thanks in advance Arturo
