Thanks for posting a creative solution. We, too, did not want to set up four tunnels for every connection but got around it a different way. We used iproute2 to tell the gateway to always speak to the VPN on the internal interface. There is a slide show about how to do this on http://iscs.sourceforge.net under iproute2.
