To have several simultaneous IPsec SAs is not harmful per se, but of course they clutter the --status output quite a bit. The problem is that vanilla 1.97 FreeS/WAN does not support Delete SA messages, so stale IPsec SAs are not automatically deleted. You can either upgrade 1.97 to Super FreeS/WAN or apply Mathieu Lafon's Delete SA patch found at
