You should try as much as possible to have equal setups. The quality of the disk setup on the data nodes will effect Local Checkpoints, Global Checkpoints, Backups and Recovery operations, basically anything I/O related. You might want to check out the new Cluster Evaluation Guide which walks through some fundamentals around design choices. http://www.mysql.com/why-mysql/white-papers/mysql_cluster_eval_guide.php The Management Node only performs administrative tasks like backups, dispensing configuration info and arbitration services by default.
