How to upgrade mysql server and ndb nodes?

I used the mysql binary tarballs to install both mysqld and the ndbds. How can I upgrade to a new version of them? The manual says that I should just upgrade to the newest binary. But what about all the other files in
all the subdirs (bin, docs, lib, scripts, tests, configure, man, share, include, mysql-test, sql-bench, support-files)? The good thing is that I declared as my data dir a seperate directory. Can I just untar the newer version on top of this one?
