xfs or ext2. Avoid ext3 for anything!

IMHO, RAID on data nodes is a bit overkill. Of course, you can fast recover, maybe it's faster for writing.. but you can pull out a whole Data node and replace the harddrive. So saving a bit money and energy for each data node. Better invest in 1 or 2 spare data node machines, IMHO that is :)
