"Replication is not just for scale-out". It also provides backup.

The problem with preventing "data loss" is that many things can go wrong. No single solution solves all problems.

'natural disaster' - need _remote_ backup 24/7 - need several things
disk crash - RAID or slave
network failure - sol
data corruption - delayed slave
hacker - firewalls, passwords, etc
software errors - sol
controller / motherboard failure - RAID won't help etc.

If it is within your budget, replication (especially if not on the same site) may cover the most situations.
