that may be the intended case.

but,

(1) it worked BEFORE you made the most recent changes (see my original post) (2) i've been bitten many a time by NOT updating local ltmain.sh etc to be consistent with my tool env; general rule now: update for consistency
(3) it's *libtool* that's instructing that AC_PROG_RANLIB is deprecated (4) a libtool-using app *not* "surviving" standard libtool update practices lends suspicion -- admittedly, not necessarily -- that "something's wrong".

up to you, of course, but i'd argue it's wiser in the long run to ensure that "it" works ...
