New info...partially solved.

I tried running alsamixer as root and it worked, I casted about, looked at my group membership, and I was not in the audio group. I added myself to the group, logged out and in again, and I can not run Rhythmbox. Cool!

But the volume control on the menu bar is still X-ed out. I try the volume control "Preferences", nothing. I try the volume control "Open Volume Control" and it complains in a dialog box:

"No volume control GStreamer plugins and/or devices found."

What is broken now? (And how did this happen??)
