I have an ext3 formatted flash that I use. The first time, it mounted ok, but I could not write to it. Same problem as you. I noticed that when I did 'ls -la /media' that it showed the directory was owned by root:root. Even though the contents of /media/disk/ was owned by me. So, I had to 'sudo chown -R paul: /media/disk' to be able to write to it. Now, it always mounts as owner paul, and I can write to it.
