Well I figured out my problem and it was behind the keyboard. Turns out I had added...

LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=TRUE ..to my /etc/environment file somewhere along the line. Adding that has the side effect of ALWAYS RENDERING EVERYTHING IN SOFTWARE.

(bangs head against the wall)

Whew. I feel better now. I'm also enjoying 2300+ fps with glxgears now which is at least 1000 more fps than I was getting (yes yes, glxgears is not a benchmark).

GoogleEarth is now working again too.
