ASUS F3M hangs when booting after upgrade 7.04 -> 7.10

Hello Ubuntu experts,

my ASUS F3M laptop worked very well with Ubuntu Fiesty for several months. Recently I decided to upgrade to Gutsy. Since the upgrade it hangs somewhere during the booting proces with either 2.6.22-14-386 or the 2.6.22-14-generic kernel. It will boot ok with the old 2.6.20-16-386 kernel, but the the resolution of the graphic card will be low. (version mismatch between modules)

There are no logfiles of the attempts to start with a 2.6.22 kernel, but when starting in recovery mode the last sentence on the screen will be something like:

NET: Registered protocol family 17

or

ACPI PCI Interrupt 0000:00:10.1[B] -> Link [LAZA] -> GSI 22 (level, low)
-> IRQ 22
and often I will hear a tick over the pc-speaker

I know it will be difficult to troubleshoot on such a general description, but the messages flash over the screen at such a high speed that it is impossible to read them. When booting with 2.6.20 the messages I get after this might be "eth0: no IPv6 routers present" or "lp loaded but no printer found"

What can I try to make the laptop start with a 2.6.22 kernel

Do you need help?X

Aart
