Suspend/hibernate can be tricky, some users will have constant issues whilst others will have none. Usually there will be hacks or workarounds for your machine, which is what I do with my IBM Thinkpad. However Debian Etch suspend worked fine whilst for me on my Laptop out of the box.

Also I think its due to manufacturers not sticking to standards in the ACPI, therefore no one machine seems to have simular settings. I'm not totally sure on that though.
