ASEE is now administering the Science, Mathematics and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship Program. SMART Scholarships are intended for students near the end of their undergraduate/graduate studies in science, mathematics, or engineering.

Please forward this opportunity to students you know who can benefit from this scholarship program. Full tuition, required fees, book allowance, room and board and other normal educational expenses are covered for students awarded this scholarship. The application opens on January 24, 2005 and closes on March 4, 2005. Do not let a qualified student miss this deadline!

About SMART
Science, mathematics, and engineering (SME), are vital disciplines to our national defense, therefore a formal Department of Defense (DoD) Science, Mathematics and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship has been established by the Ronald W. Reagan National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2005. The purpose is to promote the education, recruitment and retention of rising junior and senior undergraduate and graduate students in SME studies. SMART Scholarships are awarded to applicants who are pursuing a degree in, or closely related to, one of the following SME disciplines:

•       Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering
•       Biosciences
•       Chemical Engineering
•       Chemistry
•       Civil Engineering
•       Cognitive, Neural, and Behavioral Sciences
•       Computer and Computational Sciences
•       Electrical Engineering
•       Geosciences
•       Materials Science and Engineering
•       Mathematics
•       Mechanical Engineering
•       Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering
•       Oceanography
•       Physics

Eligibility
The SMART Scholarship Program is open only to citizens of the United States. Persons who hold permanent resident status are not eligible. Proof of citizenship will be required. Students must be at least 18 years of age to be eligible.

SMART Scholarships are intended for students near the end of their undergraduate/graduate studies in science, mathematics, or engineering. Applicants must have received or be on track to receive their degree by Fall 2007. Students must have a minimum of a 3.0 average on a 4.0 scale in his or her course of study.

Recipients selected in Spring 2005 must begin their scholarship tenure no later than Fall 2005. The tenure of a SMART Scholarship is up to 24 months cumulatively starting Fall 2005. Students must be enrolled in full-time accredited programs leading to a degree in a field specified above.

Application and Award Dates
Application opens January 24, 2005. All materials must be received by 11:59 p.m. Eastern Standard Time on March 4, 2005. Subject to the availability of funds, award notifications will be mailed in April 2005. Application materials will not be returned to applicants.
