I've tried to stay out of the SDNV discussion before, but now that there's a sympathizer, I guess I'll chime in ;-). I second Mani's motion.

The only reason I can think of, at the moment, that SDNV's would be better is that you know how long the number is after looking at the first octet. With ASN.1-style numbers, you have to scan the entire number to figure out how long it is. I sincerely doubt that this is a big deal though.
