  NewsForge Reports

The worst-case scenario
http://newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=03/05/21/1529217

  • by Mark McGrew - Three years ago, I warned of an attempt by Big Software Companies to insinuate their control into your life, using your computer as their "foot in the door." Well, a lot has changed. Of the three players I named (IBM, AT&T, and Microsoft) only one remains a credible threat to Linux users: Microsoft, with SCO as its lackey.

Linux Advisory Watch - May 23rd, 2003
http://newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=03/05/23/1216237

  • by Benjamin D. Thomas - This week, advisories were released for bugzilla, lv, mysql, sendmail, bitchx, PHP, gnupg, cdrtools, xinetd, fileutils, lpr, epic4, glibc, mod_ssl, and quotacheck. The distributors include Conectiva, Debian, Guardian Digital, Gentoo, Immunix, Mandrake, OpenPKG, RedHat, and Slackware. There were not any advisories that particularly caught my attention. Perhaps the most serious are lpr, cdrecord, and lv, all of which may ...

Open Group reminds us: They, not SCO, own 'Unix' trademark http://newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=03/05/22/2236230

  • from The Open Group - Regarding SCO's positioning on UNIX, The Open Group would like to make it clear that SCO holds the rights ONLY to the operating system source code (originally licensed by AT&T) and related intellectual property and DOES NOT OWN the UNIX trademark itself or the definition (the Single UNIX Specification) of what the UNIX system is.

The action-class lawsuit

Do you need help?X

Anonymous Reader writes "The legal profession is adept at suing in     behalf of huge numbers of people, all at once. The question facing the     SCO Group, writes Dennis E. Powell in The view from the desktop, is:     How does one plaintiff sue millions of defendants all at once?"

IDC: Servers to make mild recovery
http://newsvac.newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=03/05/24/1628251

SAN JOSE, Calif.--Server sales are expected to return to modest growth     by 2004 because of wider use of Linux and Windows, but the increase     won't be enough to carry the bruised market to the level of its glory     years of early 2000, IDC research shows.

Why don't you and he fight?
http://newsvac.newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=03/05/24/1624207

Dave B writes "What are SCO trying to accomplish with their very public     attacks on IBM, Linux and corporate america? Bob Cringely doesn't know,     it makes no kind of sense, but he thinks it's a question someone should     be asking Microsoft."

SCO Strategy now clear
http://newsvac.newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=03/05/24/1621257

Agent Orange writes "Thanks to the good folks at Linux Voodoo, I now     have a much clearer perspective of the arguments that SCO intends to     use in its legal manuevering. The arguments are clear - but they are     flawed. What SCO intends to claim is copyright and ownership of some     sort of "code slippage" wherein a possible SCO (or Caldera?) employee     may have distributed code under the GPL that they did not have the     right to distribute."

Meet Kast
http://newsvac.newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=03/05/24/1620237

Do you need more help?X

Anonymous Reader writes "With the arrival of Kast, described by its     creator, Jason Rohrer, as the first konspire2b-based app, "powerful     organizations lost the advantage that they had been holding onto for     hundreds of years" and for the first time, people can distribute,     "high-quality content to a massive audience without expending large     amounts of time, money, or other resources"."

Michael Tiemann on the new W3C patent policy http://newsvac.newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=03/05/24/1618229

Jeremy Hogan writes: The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) has published     its long-awaited Patent Policy. This ground-breaking policy delivers     two immediate benefits:

Microsoft vs. Linux Takes a Weird Turn http://newsvac.newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=03/05/23/1431240

Gates & Co. are paying a licensing fee for SCO's Unix technology --     and some techies see a plot to derail the rival operating system.

   Making the Move To Linux
http://newsvac.newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=03/05/23/181211

Since 1995, my friend Tristan Louis has run his Web site TNL.net on     Microsoft Windows. He started his site on Windows NT using Microsoft     IIS. In late 2000, he moved to Windows 2000 and continued to run on     this until recently, when he switched to Linux. wWy did he decide to     change things? Here is his story.

Microsoft Likes Open Source. Kind Of.
http://newsvac.newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=03/05/23/184204

Can we help you?X

In the escalating controversy that pits The SCO Group--owner of one of     the original Unix operating systems--against Linux developers and     distributors, Microsoft has come down, predictably, on the side of SCO.     Yet, overlooked in the stir created when Microsoft recently licensed     SCO's Unix for use in some of its products is the fact that Microsoft     itself has been easing restrictions on its own code.

The Ponytail vs the Penguin
http://newsvac.newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=03/05/23/1752246

Dave B writes "The Economist's "Face Value" profile this week is Sun's     Jonathan Schwartz. Is Sun's Solaris on X86 a better strategy to counter     the Linux-Intel juggenaut than Microsoft's solution of a 100% MS     Windows discount? The Economist thinks it has promise."
