The inevitability of Total Information Awareness http://newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=03/08/13/1755205

  • by Campbell Vertesi - In the age of the Internet, technology inevitably fills demand. In the case of music-swapping services, we all recognize that the recording industry hasn't a hope of stopping every file-sharing service around. So long as there is a demand for easy access to music, technology will rise to meet that demand, and all the lawsuits in the world won't help the RIAA to stop it. So why should we expect anything different from ...

SCO Scuttles Sense, Claiming GPL Invalidity http://newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=03/08/18/160200

Tea leaves and Linux market share
http://newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=03/08/18/1516245

  • by Joe Barr - I was - just as the story lead suggested - a bit slackjawed over a statistic from Gartner Dataquest cited in a recent news story. Try as I might, I could not make that statistic fit with data from IDC.

Unix/Linux Keystroke Information Disclosure Weakness http://newsvac.newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=03/08/18/1944211

A weakness has been discovered in the entropy pool implemented by the     /dev/random device on various Unix-derived operating systems. The     problem occurs when the pool has been emtpied, and the entropy     mechanism begins to the seed the pool with a source of pseudo-random     data. It has been discovered that due to keystrokes from the console     being a source of seeding the entropy pool, it may be possible for an     attacker to deduce a user's keystrokes ...
