Mobile vs. Desktop Gaming
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/11/22/2355256

[0]Mr.Tweak writes "TweakTown has just posted an article investigating
Mobile vs. Desktop gaming in their latest article entitled [1]"New Age Computer Gaming - Mobile vs. Desktop Investigation". The article compares a Dell Inspiron 8200 with ATI Mobility 9000 graphics to a standard desktop system with nVidia GeForce4 Ti4200 graphics. Can notebook gaming really be taken seriously? We think so, and so should you!"

Review of the New Shuttle XPC Chassis
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/11/22/1859255

DigiKid writes "Mini PCs are all the rage these days it seems, especially for the LAN Gamers in our midst. [0]Shuttle Computer has been releasing new additions to their line of XPCs, that have the latest features, like USB 2.0, Firewire, and even support for Intel's Pentium 4 with Hyperthreading. [1] This review takes you on a tour of the newest XPC from Shuttle, based on the i845GE chipset. The benchmarks don't lie and this tiny little cube PC holds its own versus a full sized rig." Last week I put together a 51g from them and was very impressed at how well it works and how quiet it is. Links

Transmeta Astro Processor
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/11/23/000257

simpl3x writes "Apparently, Transmeta's next generation processor was
[0]demonstrated to some folks the other day at Comdex. Tom's Hardware
was at the demo and they had [1]this to say: "The new Transmeta Astro was faster in every demo that we saw than the Pentium 4m 1.8GHz chip that was in the Sony GRX." Cnet had some [2]information on the processor also . I just ordered a tablet to play with, though I ordered the Fujitsu which has a P3m (the Compaq has a bad screen according to the reviews). I certainly wish that something like this were available, and i do hope that the manufacturing goes smoothly. Mo options, mo better."

University of Twente Back Online
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/11/22/2112259

[0]UncleH writes "[1]University of Twente is back online again, after
the University NOC burned to ashes on wednesday. This also means that the much discussed University Campus network is also fully available again. The university already had internet access through a masquerading box in the network of their [2]neighbours. Big hurrah for the network engineers of the University, large applause for the network engineers of [3]SURFnet for restoring the 10Gbps Point of Presence within 36 hours after the fire."

Verizon Sues to Stop Privacy Rules; Wants to Sell Call Data http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/11/22/216226

Do you need more help?X

[0]Jake writes "Verizon has asked a federal court to [1]stop state
regulators from enforcing new privacy rules that would prohibit telephone companies from using or sharing details about customers' calling habits without permission. Verizon, which serves nearly 1 million customers across Washington state, had plans to begin a data-sharing system that allowed the company and its affiliates to collect information on when, where and how often customers make telephone calls. It would use that data to sell new products and services to customers." "We believe we have certain rights as a corporation to use this information," Verizon's PR person says. Great. Links

Quark Matter Blamed for Paired 1993 Seismic Events http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/11/22/195207

[0]Ethanon writes "In an [1]article posted by BBC, scientists have
suggested that two Ã^ÂÂ^ÓunassociatedÃ^ÂÂ^Ô seismic events that occurred in 1993 were actually strange Quark matter passing through the Earth at a speed of perhaps 250 miles per second. A spec of strange Quark matter the size of a human cell is said to be so dense that it could weigh a tonne! Check it out "

First Emergency Use of Whole-Aircraft Parachute http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/11/22/1936230

[0]Ahotasu writes "Over at [1]SpaceFlightNow, there is a short NASA
[2]news release discussing the development of and first emergency use
of a production parachute system for a general aviation aircraft. Whole-ultralight parachute systems have been available and used for some time, but this is apparently the first use in a "certified general-aviation aircraft". From the article: "In October 2002, a pilot released his single engine aircraft's parachute and landed safely in a Texas mesquite- tree grove. The pilot was uninjured, and there was minimal damage to the plane. The safe landing made aviation history, as it was the first emergency application of an airframe parachute on a certified aircraft." Here's the [3]company's website. Looks like right now, they only have models for a select few gen. aviation aircraft, probably the most popular models."

Using PDAs for Dictation?
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/11/22/137254

[0]SunPin asks: "I'm a writer that is 99% dependent, due to fine-motor
disabilities, on voice dictation. I've been a dictation user since

  1. My preference is 'discrete' speech because of very low resource consumption and its effectively infinite flexibility. Over the years, my computer use has de-evolved to programming, FTP, email (Mozilla), word processing (OpenOffice) and Ricochet. Drop the game and there's nothing that I shouldn't be allowed to do on the go. The problem is that I can't. Back in 1990, the requirements for IBM VoiceType were: DOS, 8MB RAM, 10MB of drive space with one of those new-fangled scorching 386-16MHz processors... not exactly demanding by today's standards and, unless I'm outright wrong, not demanding by today's PDA standards. Why hasn't it occurred yet?" Links

http://freshmeat.net/releases/104046/

Ragel compiles finite state machines from regular languages into runnable C code. It allows you to embed actions at any point in your regular language and to control the non-determinism in the resulting machines. It understands concatenation, union (the "or" operator), kleene star, subtraction, and intersection, as well as some helpers like "!", "?" and "+". Ragel's finite state machines are closed under all of its operators. This property allows for arbitrary regular lanuages to be described. It can be used to create a parser for any language that is regular.
